Hi anyone who still reads, seems that these forums are very inactive!

Anyway, i'll be browsing round these forums whilst I familiarise myself with Linux, i'm an avid fan of the idea behind OSS but have never managed to get my head around it in the past.

Recently I forced myself to learn the basics of Linux as I installed Xebian (Debian for xbox) on an xbox so I could use it as a file server, after a few hiccups and alot of messing about I now have a very stable little file server running smb shares, freevo (hooked up to a nice big TV) and also running Torrentflux/bittornado to do all of my downloading.

I've now decided to take the step with my laptop (main pc) too, although i'm keeping a windows partition for the stuff I can't do in linux yet, had a play with some live cd's Linspire/Debian/SuSE/PCLinuxOS/Mandrivia and possibly a few others I forgot and have opted to install Mandrivia (after failing to get my wifi cards working in PCLinuxOS) and i'm a complete novice! All good fun though.

Hi all
I like to mess with computers regardless of the OS but I always have Linux and/or BSD running on a couple of PCs. I use Mitel Networks SME Server to run my own web/email/Jabber/ftp server and have SuSE 10 as my plaything. I have also played with Mandrake, Redhat, CentOS, SOlaris 10 and FreeBSD as I like to learn lots. I also play with that strange OS emanating from Redmond. Twisted Evil

Hi all,

My name is Matthew Gates. I've recently moved up the the Northeast (yay!) from the Southeast (boo!). More specifically, I'm now located in Northumberland a little North of Morpeth.

I'm 0x1e years old, but have an infantile sense of humour. I've been friendly with penguins since '96 - totally MS free since '02.

I write my own man pages.

I guess I'll have to get a job sooner or later, but until I get round to that sort of nonsense I've been putting together a MediaWiki-based site for walkers in the Northeast: WikiWikiWalks. All I need now is some traffic... I'm hoping there'll be some folks here who might want to contribute.

Pleased to meet you Very Happy

Hello. I'm James but you can call me Chewi. I'm a 4th year CompSci student at Durham. I've been using Linux for 2 years and have been on Gentoo for a year and a half. I totally ditched Windows about 3 months ago though I actually stopped using it on a regular basis as soon as I found Gentoo. Cool I've vaguely known about this group for a while but I didn't realise you met in Durham until now. I went to the rowing club once but that was for a live band night! I'll see ya on Wednesday, I guess!

Well, I've had a play with the website - the colour is the biggest giveaway!!

Anyway, the plan is to keep it roughly as it is for a few months or so, in the meantime, I have to design and build a site for college, so I'm going to kill two birds with one stone, and make a shiny new Durham LUG site, however, I'm going to have to go with the pace of the rest of the class I suppose, and write various bits an pieces about it, but your input would be great; ideas for the current site and forum, and for the new one, your opinion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

James

If anyone's still out there looking at the forums (I've been slack recently in checking, tut tut)...

Has anyone thought about / would like to think about tours of each other's places of work to see how Linux is being used in the environments?
Just wondering if we could maybe get some tours or talks going (or at very least some kind of powerpoint info about environments) looking at how OSS and Linux are used and how they've helped in the environments we look after / use ?

Anyone out there interested?

I've got some major projects coming up at the school I now work at to rebuild cores of the network and provision services. Will try and put some case studies together if anyone is interested?

Open Source Software in Education & Student Prizegiving On 29 Oct 08 7:00 pm at Room A001, Ellison Building, Northumbria University

"OSS Watch is the national advisory service for open source in Further
Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE). We give impartial advice on
procurement, engagement, development... and legal issues (but we aren't
lawyers).

FE should care about open source because of UK Government and EC
guidelines, and its momentum and wide usage in industry and
institutions. But also for its flexibility, interoperability, etc. In
fact, software on servers and desktops is moving from mostly closed to
half and half in the future; 67% have an open source policy; and 56%
consider open source at procurement, although only 15% in equal terms.

Open source is software released under an OSI license at its simplest,
but good open source is much more. In this presentation, issues, facts
and myths will be discussed, e.g. Is it always the right solution? Who
sustains open source? Is it cheaper or more expensive? Can I make money
out of it? Is local customisation better than engaging with an external
community? And last but not least, how do I engage with it?"

Well it is scheduled for the third Saturday of each September which means we have missed it for 2007 but we do have plenty of time before the next one - who knows we may even have a working "Toaster" by then Smile

Has anyone used simple-cdd before?

I've just started to play around with it on my Debian development laptop and I've had mixed success with it.

It allows the simple generation of customised install CD's based on the base net install version of Debian, but I've found some bugs in the default scripts that have bombed out my compile of the iso image.

Has anyone had similar experience?

I'm trying to develop custom kernels & install CD's via the traditional route, but am using simple-cdd for my "oops I just did a cat to the wrong dev folder...I need a web development server.. now!" moments !

Went along to the Infosec 2007 Conference in London this week, spending time chatting to vendors and security experts - some very cool stuff coming on the market and upgrades to older products.
Spoke to the Smoothwall and AstaroSec Linux guys at the show and had a look at their new dedicated boxes.
Anyone in here still using their gear? I managed to get a free copy of Astaro on CD and offers of tests of both Astaro and Smoothwall rackmount gear (which are both highly spangly! mmmm flashing lights) Laughing

Got me thinking though - what are NELUG people using at the moment and has anyone got any stories of Linux saving their posterior ?

I used to use Astaro in a previous Net Admin Role, saved my bacon when CodeRed and a few others hit. Very Happy

Hi people ...
I've been using Fedora since it was "Fedora Core 1" a while back now. Each release is as expected, better than before.

Which distro to use is a mix of personal and practical, but I do like Fedora (and, it has to be said, Ubuntu/SuSe/Debian/Puppy/Caldera/ ... and many more) so have installed distros before.

However ... I've just downloaded the new release of Fedora 10 as a dvd iso, then burnt the image to disk with nero and tried to install it. I have burned many iso's for Linux before too, but not sure where I'm going wrong here!!! [frustrated]
No joy!!!

My BIOS is set to boot from cd/dvd, but disc is not recognised as a 'bootable disk' (DRIVE reads other iso boots, so I suspect the iso is not what it's made out to be! - unless I've created the error during the burning phase myself!

Anyway, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Has anyone else tried to do the same but succeeded?

I'm sure it's going to be one of those obvious 'things' where I should have known it from experience, but ....

any help / suggestion gratefully received ...

I am happy to transfer them to a new owner, if I receive no reply by the weekend(02/02/2008) then I will point the domains towards a parking page until further notice.

1.Yes, the archive should be public 2 / 67%
2.No, I'd prefer it to be private 0 / 0%
3.Not sure 1 / 33%

Some other lists have been talking about the mailing list archives maintained by some LUGs, and whether they should be available to the public (anonymous users), or whether they should only be available to members...

So, Should the NELUG archive be public or not?

A fellow NELUG member found an interesting document on the web, and recommended it to me for the website, but i thought i'd post it here in the mean time, see if anyone would like to discuss it.

Hi Richard,

This was the second Durham LUG meeting at our "temporary" venue.

As Brian mentioned in another post there was a good attendance this time, 8 people turned up (half of whom are from the Tyneside LUG).

As most people who have been visiting the forum over the last few weeks will be aware the NELUG is now an umbrella organisation for all LUGs in the North East region. It took Brian and the Tyneside LUG quite a while to develop their relationship with the Discover Museum. We have been very lucky to get such a good response from the Clayport library who seem keen to have us meet there.

There was no formal structure for the meeting, partly because we didn't know how many people were going to turn up but mostly because I only got back from Rotherham the day before the meeting and hadn't had much time to get organised.

I spent some time talking to Ray and Alan about problems they were having trying to connect Linux boxes to the Internet; explaining a little about IP addresses, DHCP, NAT, DNS and name resolution.

I also managed to hook up the SLES box I have been using to test Liferay (the Open source JSR168 Portal framework) I am using to redesign the NELUG website - forgetting the admin password and that it still needed to be started manually didn't help but we got it going in the end using the projector.

For some reason the SLES box was running painfully slowly - as has been pointed out in another post things would probably be a lot quicker without the GUI.

I spoke to Richard after the meeting and took charge of the NELUG "library" the contents of which will be documented on the new website which I still hope to have up and running by the end of the month.

Four of us went for a quick drink afterwards in the bar round the corner where we had the chance to continue the discussion about the development of the Durham LUG and NELUG framework.

One of the topics discussed was the inclusion of some form of technical presentation or briefing and the difficulties involved due to the varying degrees of technical knowledge and experience of the people who attend. We will need to be better organised and perhaps draw up a schedule once we have a better idea of what people want to know more about and also get a better idea of the skill/experience level of the people attending.

It is still early days but the general feeling is that we are moving in the right direction.

The next regular (3rd Tuedsday) meeting - 17th April is already booked.

Tuesday 21st November was the first month we were unable to meet at the rowing club!

The meeting still took place, but a the Tap & Spile in Framwellgate Moor.

It has been suggested that we meet there while the rowing club is unavailable...

Hi All,

Reminder of the coming meeting...

Wednesday 15th September 2004, usual place (Durham rowing club), usual time (8:00PM)

Unfortunately, I'll not be able to make it this time, as I'll be somewhere a little warmer (I hope).

I hope you all have a good time (as normal), and I'll see you all next month (13th October).

Hi All,

I'm after an easy to use/configure ups for a linux system, I am currently using sme server (www.contribs.org) purely cause it does everything I need and nothing I dont, and it works straight out of the box with no messing on, which is good as I dont know linux that well I used to be a mandrake fan since v8 but have now been converted over to fedora 3 it is so nice, I am running 2 machines at the moment both on little mini-itx boxes which suit me just fine.

Anyway back to the ups any recommendations ?

I would like a nice stats thing on the web server also, something like upsstats.cgi

does anyone have any experience with this or a similar thinclient, i came accross one a few weeks ago and have been trying to get it to boot up. with the 2.2.18 kernel designed for it it boots fine but tries to mount its root filesystem as nfs / and there doesnt seem to be a way to pass commandline parameters(you can see why this is annoying), ive tried compiling various kernels for it myself(with the default nfs-root set how i want) but they all crash and i dont know why.

if i bring this thing to your next meeting would there be anyone else there who knows anything about it and could guide me into getting it to boot. would there be a computer running nfs and bootp available?

<edit>
stupid me - no point in bringing it, cos it doesnt have a serial port so without a monitor couldnt test it anyway. oh well if anyone does have any ideas on how to make it boot let me know.
</edit>

cheers,

Hello and greetings,

finally got myself around to signing up for the forum (lazy so and so I am).
I've been developing a few web applications over the past couple of years and have recently released what started off as my degree project - a virtual learning environment.
If anyone is interested, I've given it up to the OSS community for use in schools/colleges/wherever. Info on my site and sourceforge.

Is anyone in the group working in education at the moment? I used to work as a net admin at a local college and would be interested to hear from people with experience of OSS in Education.

cheers Very Happy

Just because we've always done it "that way" doesn't mean it's the best way.

I've been running Redhat 9 for a while, but think it's time to move on. It's getting harder to find new rpm's or to get source to compile without work.

The final straw was installing 'apt-get', under the impression it would make life easier. It promptly rolled bake half the applications on my system to older versions. Crying or Very Sad

As I don't have the hart to sit and upgrade everything again, I though I might go the whole hog and give another distribution a go.

I keep hearing good things about Gentoo and according to their website, all the software I need is well covered.

My main concern is hardware compatibility and was hoping you guys might be able to advise.
This is the system I'm aiming for (not all of which ever worked under redhat)

Motherboard GA-7N400 Pro
IDE Hardware Raid 1 (Giga Raid IT8212 )
SATA Hardware Raid 1 (Silicon Image sil3112A)
SCSI DAT Drive – HP DAT8
Zip 100 drive
Wacom graphite3 pen
Dual monitors running on ATI Radeon 9200 atlantis
CD/DVD RW
USB card reader

Okay, thought I'd better keep threads separate. SuSE 9.2 the system. I would like to install a theme but have no idea what file or files to install it into and how to 'activate' it. Anyone got any clues on this? I've not changed the file system from what installed -I don't know enough to dare risking it!

Remember I'm a newbie. Just been playing around with SuSE 9.2 running KDE and I keep getting hints that there are more programmes on the hdd than the menus are telling me [there are files in various folders with names like Kaffeine]. In particular I'm looking for a CD player/ripper. So my question is where do I find those programmes and [assuming they're there] how do I get them to put in an appearance on the GUI?

Hello, I discovered two bugs in the kde 3.2.2 packages, namely kdebase-3.2.2.

1) It does not install the following two files:
/opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xreset
/opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xstartup

2) The following library is not installed either: libkcm_input.la
When selecting Control Center --> Peripherals --> Mouse... kde complains it cannot find libkcm_input.la.

I have confirmed both of these issues with some of my friends in #slackware @ freenode, posted on usenet, and mailed pat to inform him.

Hi All,

Just so you know, after a little investigation, i have managed to get full OpenGL acceleration working with my ATI 9700 card, i can now play Quake III at a decent speed, TUX Racer is also a lot more playable Smile

If anyone else is having problems with ATI 9700, then i may be able to help.

I'm using gentoo, but i'm sure the others will be quite similar.

Richard
