Hi All,
Just so you know, after a little investigation, i have managed to get full OpenGL acceleration working with my ATI 9700 card, i can now play Quake III at a decent speed, TUX Racer is also a lot more playable 
If anyone else is having problems with ATI 9700, then i may be able to help.
I'm using gentoo, but i'm sure the others will be quite similar.
